Ryder Cup player Paul Way visits the Royal Malta Golf Club
Former Ryder Cup player Paul Way was recently in Malta along with Phil Bartholomew from the James Andrews School of Golf in Sussex, for a short but useful training event with youngsters from the Royal Malta Junior Academy.
Paul Way has an outstanding Ryder Cup record of six wins, two losses and one halved match. He was on the victorious 1985 team that brought the Ryder Cup to Europe after a lapse of several years.
The club's top junior players, Chris Bergedahl, J.J. Micallef and Danny Holland, had an opportunity to play nine holes with Way under the watchful eyes of numerous other juniors and club members at the Royal Malta Golf Club, Marsa.
The second part of the programme involved two training sessions conducted by Paul Way and the James Andrews School of Golf.
Twenty-three enthusiastic hopefuls from the Eagle, Birdie and Par groups participated in the two sessions which covered the full swing as well as chipping and putting aspects of the sport.
David Debono, club Junior Academy head, thanked Paul Way and for his visit as well as David Wicks, team manager of the Sussex under 14 county squad and Philip Bartholomew of the residential golf school, for giving their services free of charge.
He also showed his appreciation towards Theresa Delia, CEO of Business Meetings Malta, the free conference venue finding company and Brian Bartolo, General Manager of Marketing at Air Malta, for sponsoring the event.
The Air Malta competition for juniors was also played at the club. The competition was over six holes from the red tees while juniors from the Bogey group took part in a putting event.
The winners on the day were Amber Abele, Nico Fauser, Ralph Debono and Francesco Borg Bonello.
